Kitsilano Secondary School Renewal

In October 2011, the Province announced that Kitsilano Secondary School will be renewed through a $57.8 million restoration project.

Kitsilano Secondary School will be seismically upgraded, with new construction meeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold Standards.

The announcement follows a year-long process of public consultation and conceptual design, conducted in 2009/2010. This process culminated in a renewal plan that preserves key heritage elements of the school, including 1927 heritage elevations, and introduces Neighbourhood Learning Centre space for community use. Construction is expected to begin in 2013, and will be implemented in three phases to minimize disruption to students and staff.

The Vancouver Board of Education (VBE) and the Kitsilano school community is engaging in a new phase of work in the renewal process. This stage will focus on detailed facility planning, and will involve input from school staff and teachers, students, parents, and community stakeholders.
