Renewing Queen Mary Elementary

Queen Mary Elementary has been identified by the Vancouver Board of Education (VBE) as a priority school for seismic upgrading and facility renewal. The school is a high priority for renewal because of its seismic risk status and aged building infrastructure.

In 2009, the VBE and the Queen Mary community engaged in a visioning process to inform the school’s evolution as a Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC) — formerly Neighbourhood Centre for Learning and Development.

Building directly on the work completed to date, the next step in the Queen Mary renewal process is to undertake a consultative planning and design process to explore school renewal design solutions. The optimal design solution will include, but not be limited to, the consideration of seismic safety, VBE school design principles, life cycle assessment, heritage and sustainability. The work will result in one preferred concept plan to be considered by the VBE in October 2011.

Watch this website for updates about the renewal process and opportunities to join the discussion about the future of the school.
