Reflecting on BCNPHA #HousingCentral Conference 2016

This year’s BCNPHA #HousingCentral Conference was a showcase of excellent work and best practices from around the province and optimism surrounding recent funding announcements. CitySpaces was especially proud to present two sessions!

CitySpaces’ Manager of Housing and Community Planning, Jada Basi, presented on an emerging best practice of Family Friendly Housing Policy. Jada provided an overview of the challenges experienced by low and moderate income families to afford the average rental and ownership housing in their respective communities, and the trends in municipal policy to address the issues including case studies.

Jada also presented on Small Towns, Big Issues: Addressing Housing Need in Small Communities. The enthusiastic full house heard about the unique housing issues facing small communities across the Province, and how to demonstrate need with limited data and limited social infrastructure. We had an overwhelming response to this session and not a seat left in the room. Thank you to everyone who attended our sessions!

One of Jada’s favourite sessions from this years’ conference was the Housing Inclusive of Trans delivered by TransFocus Consulting. The consultants provided an overview of the appropriate and inclusive language and provided insight into creating inclusive housing that meets the needs of trans* clients. We learned a lot! And obtained new tools to help plan better housing projects for vulnerable populations including the trans* community. (Thank you, Kai and Drew!)

CitySpaces’ Planning and Project Coordinator, Joanna Gauld, participated in several sessions including a housing bike tour! The tour was hosted by a number of generous and inspiring providers, including Sakuro So, Four Sisters Housing Co-op, First United Church and Skwachay’s Lodge. And a warm, delicious and well-deserved lunch was served by Groundswell. An event not to be missed at next year’s conference!

Of course, our favourite part of the conference was the chance to see old friends and make new ones. Thank you BCNPHA for hosting such a wonderful event!

We captured photos of the conference below. You can also check out Jada’s presentations by downloading them from the BCNPHA’s website.
