In late 2012 and early 2013 CitySpaces carried out the Jasper Place Neighbourhood Housing Assessment as commissioned by the City of Edmonton.

Jasper Place is a long-established community, located in the western part of Edmonton. Comprised of the four mature neighbourhoods of West Jasper Place, Glenwood, Britannia-Youngstown and Canora, Jasper Place has its own distinctive residential character. Stony Plain Road bisects the community north from south, and is predominantly characterized by highway-oriented commercial premises.

Proud of its past as an independent municipality until 1964 the Jasper Place community had a desire to ensure that future planning is sensitive to maintaining its low-scale, tree-lined residential character within the “core” of its four neighbourhoods, while accepting modest change along major arterial roads.

In 2012, City Council identified the importance of looking at housing at a neighbourhood-level, particularly for Edmonton’s mature neighbourhoods. The Jasper Place Neighbourhood Housing Assessment is the first to be undertaken.

Existing data was analyzed for the Jasper Place Neighbourhood Housing Assessment. This consisted of housing structural types, condition and building age, tenure, occupancy density, property assessment, rate of change, homeownership, rental, population age, mobility, housing affordability, non-market housing inventory, and vacant lands.

The analysts of the Jasper Place Neighbourhood Housing Assessment spent time driving, walking and taking photographs throughout Jasper Place. They also visited local retailers and services, realtor “open houses”, and Grant McEwan college. Through spending time in the neighbourhood, and with contact with residents through the aligned Jasper Place Area Redevelopment Planning process, a number of observations were made that contributed to the Jasper Place Neighbourhood Housing Assessment.

The Jasper Place Neighbourhood Housing Assessment received valuable input from a number of selected organizations and individuals, some identified below.
