Built for The Bloom Group Community Services Society, CitySpaces carried out the development consulting for the newly-renovated Powell Place women’s shelter. The Project updated the existing 26-bed facility to 52 spaces, providing its community of women with a safe and secure shelter environment.

Powell Place is a three-storey building located in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, and is a mix of one and two-bed shelter rooms for women that require temporary accommodation. The renovated facility is complemented by new program and administrative spaces, the addition of an elevator, and a commercial kitchen and dining area for its residents.

Its flexible spaces encourage individual, small, or large gatherings among residents. An outdoor courtyard garden provides residents with an opportunity to participate in Society-led garden programs.

Powell Place Features:

  • Mix of 1 and 2-bed shelter rooms
  • Accessible units
  • Brand new elevator
  • Upgraded HVAC system
  • Commercial kitchen & communal dining area
  • Residents’ kitchen
  • Residents’ lounge area
  • 24/7 staffing

Acting as the Owner’s representative for the Bloom Group, CitySpaces coordinated the selection process for the Design Team and the Construction Manager and undertook a lead role in the final stages of securing Federal funding for the project.
