Squamish Helping Hands

CitySpaces Consulting was retained by Squamish Helping Hands Society to evaluate a series of properties for the proposed relocation of its existing shelter and drop-in centre, and to assist in the selection of an appropriate location.  In addition, an assessment of the related capital and operating costs inherent to each site was undertaken to inform the feasibility of relocation.

Guided by the vision that individual and overall community health can be realized through sustainable shelter and food solutions, the non-profit Squamish Helping Hands Society (the Society) has been supporting the needs of the most vulnerable individuals in the Sea to Sky corridor since 2006.

Squamish Helping Hands Society operates out of a re-purposed, 950 sq. ft. building donated by the District of Squamish, offering through volunteer efforts and contributions the only emergency shelter in the Sea to Sky Corridor. The Society has continued to expand its service offering, always focused however on ensuring that for those in need, the Society would represent a safe place to sleep and receive a healthy meal and where people will be treated with dignity and respect. The Society expanded the services it offers to the community, beyond its current emergency shelter and drop-in service, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including a food distribution program, overnight and daytime services such as case planning, hot meals, and a community garden.  Reflecting upon its current shelter and drop-in centre location, the Society concluded that the existing space cannot adequately meet its current or anticipated program and space needs.
