In 1998, the B.C. provincial government announced its intention to advance the commencement date of the new rapid transit system along the Broadway-Lougheed-Coquitlam-New Westminster corridor.  This announcement recognized Greater Vancouver residents’ desire and need for additional rapid transit.

The announcement of Rapid Transit 2000 was accompanied by a strong commitment to public consultation.  From the outset, the provincial government committed to working in partnership with the municipalities and the public along the proposed alignment.

CitySpaces provided consultation services to Rapid Transit 2000 Ltd. in respect to routing and station design for the Vancouver and Burnaby SkyTrain routes. In addition CitySpaces provided preliminary consultation for the potential extension of a new line from the new Lougheed Station in Burnaby along North Road into Port Moody and through to Coquitlam.

The Station Design Program provided the public with the opportunity to participate in the design of the SkyTrain station in their neighbourhood, to create a functional, safe and attractive entrance to their rapid transit system that complements the surrounding community.

The alignment component of the public consultation heard points raised on a range of topics including the subject of noise, safety/security, parking/traffic, visual impacts, transit integration, travel time along the route, fares, construction timing/sequence, construction impacts, and property acquisition requirements.
