Kitsilano Secondary, with 1,500 students, is at high seismic risk has been a priority for renewal for the Vancouver School Board.
The school also has important heritage features.  CitySpaces coordinated a consultative, nine-month planning and concept design process, resulting in an in-depth “Project Definition Report for Capital Funding” submission to the Ministry of Education. In Fall 2011, the Province approved funding proceed with the renewal. A condition of the funding was the use of “design build” to secure construction. CitySpaces continued to provide advice, communications and consultation services to the VSB through the process of securing a design builder in the period 2012/13.

The plan for the school renewal included the heritage elevations of the original 1927 building, while creating a new complex incorporating a “21st Century Learning Environment”. Key features will include new academic space an all-weather planning field, three gymnasiums, a 350-seat theatre, and spaces for individualized support and collaborative group work.

On August 30 2013, the Vancouver School Board awarded the contract for the renewal of the school to Bouygues Building Canada in the amount of $62.2 million.
