CitySpaces provided services to the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) to develop a Best Practices Guidebook for Sustainable Site Planning with a focus on the rural context. The Sustainable Site Planning Best Practices Guidebook specifically addresses the Rural Residential land use designation from the Regional Growth Strategy, with an intended audience of small rural land owners with little to no subdivision or land development experience.

Key objectives of the Sustainable Site Planning Best Practices Guidebook include:

  • Maintaining rural character;
  • Building rural resiliency; and
  • Reducing hazard risks.

As a user-friendly guidebook using rich illustrations, the Sustainable Site Planning Best Practices Guidebook covers best practices for site planning, solar orientation, ground water protection, stormwater management, habitat protection, forest fire risk reduction, and food production for both parcel and rural subdivisions.

The Sustainable Site Planning Best Practices Guidebook was the third in the RDN’s guidebook series and that builds on the work within the Alternative Forms of Rural Development practice and is consistent with regional planning policies.
